Workshop on historical medical objects

On 25 June, we spent an insightful day at the German Museum of the History of Medicine in Ingolstadt. During an interactive workshop, we identified historical medical objects ranging from instruments related to the theory of the four humours to surgical tools and anesthesia masks, while learning to relate them to their historical context as well as the diseases and epidemics that occurred at that time. A subsequent guided tour supplemented the knowledge. We then enjoyed a guided tour introducing us to the history and modern use of medicinal herbs. The program concluded with an engaging lecture by Theresa Fehlner on the presentation of epidemics in historical printed materials, such as newspapers.

This visit provided us with valuable insights into the development of medicine, showing us, how medical knowledge has evolved over time, with each era building on the knowledge available to provide the best possible patient care.
